Of the limited time we had, I took her to National Taiwan University to 'explain' our book title 'Beyond Pork and PONLAI'. There is not better way and location for this purpose.  We visited 'ISO HOUSE' (Dr Iso, the father of Ponlai rice) -  A relatively neglected 'Formosa rice' development center, unknown to most expats and many Taiwanese locals.  Formosa rice refers to Ponlai rice. Indigenous note - The Forgotten Oil Millet of Taiwan

  Taro ball with 'oil millet' coating on 'South Asian' taro 南洋芋 leaf (This entry is 'Note 22' of the main Anthropology page HERE ) 'Formosan Beard Grass 台灣油芒 ' - 'Millet of the Future 'The Forgotten Oil Millet of Taiwan' was discovered by Dorian Fuller (UCL Institute of Archaeology) before a follow-up rediscovery in Pingtung by Academia Sinica researchers. It is now known as 'Formosan Beard Grass 台灣油芒 '. It grows all year round, and now promoted a good substitute for the traditional millet (foxtail), it was said.   'Lalumaj' is its Rukai name and 'Ljumay' Paiwan's. Austronesian linguistic connection was done by a research team led by Laurent Sagart .   I recently became acquainted with this forgotten and magical grain because of some creative dishes served by Bunan peoples in Taitung.   The best way to promote a grain /crop is to develop recipes, cook and serve.  Check it out when in Taitung.   Exhibition at 'N

My casual artistic 'golden moldy rice'!  (This entry is also  NOTE 21  of the ongoing Anthropology post  HERE .  ) UPDATE 12/19  (Added information on Rice Fermentation and Puli Immigrant Aborigines ) YU I did not yet get my grandmother's name. However, I *did* get some clarification on the fermented stew from my Dad.  My grandmother cooked brown rice (Dad is specific on this point) and various grains (possibly wheat but he could not remember), with nothing else (no meat, no veggies, no seasoning). Then she let the pot cool and placed it on the high shelf to grow the beneficial mold. After a few days she stirred the mixture, and re-heated it with meat and seasonings. Dad said again how delicious it was and how the kids used to ask her to make it. He says 'it wasn't really a dish-- but a way to make dishes better.' CHENG 稉米   ( sticky short-grained)  + 小米 (millet) then. Aboriginal. Some fermentation involved (maybe why the unique taste) HUNG - millet, likely fox
