Reported on Taiwan Daily News 1911 (June) - Taipei's Dadaocheng was flooded with ice and ice cream businesses, common ice cream flavours include water melon and tea. Source 臺灣古寫真上色 FB.

"The island’s first ice-making plant may have been the one set up in 1896 in Dadaocheng in Taipei by tea merchant Lee Chun-sheng (李春生) and his British business partners. In the 1910s, the Taiwan Daily News (the era’s leading newspaper) reported on the neighborhood’s thriving ice-dessert scene."

As for Republic of China things couldn't have been more different! -

Terrence Ying-Tai Lai  賴英泰 in a recent talk I attended mentioned 'Sara's Grave 莎拉之墓' in Tainan.  Saartje Specx story, unknown to many including myself, is most fascinating.  A 17th-century watercolor drawing of the Dutch East India Company’s Fort Zeelandia, present-day Tainan, taken from the Eugenius-atlas, which was commissioned by Laurens van der Hem, a Dutch lawyer and map collector. Sweet thirty hour stay - Taitung
