1885 Nov Ma-lâi agreed
submission to Qing authority, shaved to become Chinese subjects for himself and 番丁 (indigenous adult male) of 8 villages.

He was consequently granted lavish prizes on ONE condition - that Ma-lâi must collect the prizes in person at Tamsui County Magistrate's Office (today's Taiwan Provincial City God Temple). Ma-lâi's movements after becoming a wealthy Chinese subject appears unknown, undocumented (at least not to my knowledge).

Ma-lâi Chief of 8 villages Quchi-Ulay 屈尺-湯社

While I had no specific interest in Ma-lâi information, I was a little curious about the 'none-existence' (pretty much) of this significant chief of 8 villages after he became 'Chinese'. No information on his lineal descendants for example.

KEY information given by Professor 黃富三 Huang Fusan at Taiwan Old-Family Conference IV (2024)

Ma-lai Mstranan

Professor 黃富三 Huang Fusan presentation and articles matches Ma-lâ information available by Mackay and several other historical documents of the era (1845-1945).

Information I collected related to Ma-lâi and 'Mstranan'.

Qalang Mstranan - Fushan Ulay (Ma-lâ statue)

taranan 新店番 (Atayal 大豹社 Myth and Tradition 1930)

Ulay 湯社
. 湯 pronounced Yu ゆ meaning hot spring is Japanese.
Uhey  and Ulay may be related.

Mstranan
,
taranan, talaran variations of the same phrase/word I reckon. Nothing to do with a type of tree which is a common modern
indigenous practice (etymology) - giving places a tree name; places names mean a type of tree.

Lâu Siù-tsâi 劉秀才 is 劉廷玉 (Liu Tingyu)

While Ma-lâi identity remains obscure,  Lâu Siù-tsâi identity is firmly confirmed.

Dr Liu 劉啟群 is a descendant and he confirmed with me the man and woman on the 'scroll-on-silk' are 劉廷玉 (Liu Tingyu) and his wife. The Warners took these photos from Liu's ancestral home or institute.

Dr Liu 劉啟群 confirms the identity of man and woman being 劉廷玉 (Liu Tingyu) and wife. Also identifies location where these scrolls were photographed by the Warner couple.

It is a Taiwanese taboo to open a business in direct opposition to a temple. However - Astoria founders were 5 Russians and 1 Taiwanese- the taboo did not bother them .
