Quelang (Keelung) 基隆 Etymology - 圍欄


Quelang (Keelung) and Qalang or Qulijat  (with a number of indigenous variations) should all be the same -  meaning 'Fence' ' 'Territories' 'Protected Land' aka 圍欄.

The 'Q' initial appears a European (Religious) impact (as in Atayal and Paiwan's case). 

Indigenous use - Sometimes 'K' sometimes without, sometimes replaced with something else - doesn't matter, the origin should be the same 圍欄 or related.

NOT indigenous language but Chinese/Hokkien in origin.

Fun Taiwanese Linguistic fact! Paylang (Taiwanese Han) = pháinn-lâng (Bad People)!

Indigenous 'Paylang' 白浪 (Taiwanese Han) = Taiwanese Hokkien ‘ pháinn-lâng’ 歹人 (Bad People) Indigenous - Taiwan Hokkien  Linguistics Puzzle Remarkably Solved!   陳耀昌  Chen Yao Chang a veteran hematology professor, stem cell researcher and historical novelist - o nce again supplied me the answer to a question from 3 years ago, an answer I have not been able to reach from any indigenous 'specialists' I came across.  First wonderful information Professor Chen gave me is on  The Principal Unit of Land Measure  : The principal unit of land measure is 甲 (Taiwanese: kah, Hakka: kap, Mandarin: jiǎ). The unit is derived from the obsolete Dutch morgen, which was introduced during Taiwan's Dutch era. Tamsui (Hobe) - Connecting Peoples Story

Tamsui 1933 Chen Chengpo The Sand Pebbles 1966 Recently me and two friends went Tamsui for an afternoon walk, we didn’t stop at many, but I soon knew I was in a comfortable position stringing along peoples connection from old and new. So here it is. Tamsui's old name Hobe 滬尾  is still used especially by the mention of Hobe Gun Fort   滬尾 炮台  - one of the marine defense structures built by the Qing dynasty for Taiwan after the Sino-French war (battle at Tamsui 1884). The location was called Hoba , meaning "streams mouth" by Ketagalan aborigines, the original settlers. RED HOUSE 紅樓 was built in late 19th century and in 1913 my great grandfather 洪以南 Hong I-nan became the second owner. The house is seen first photo in Chen Chengpo's 1933 painting. Chen is the most expensive painter in Taiwan history, his Tamsui sunset 1935 reached a historical figure sold for  HK$50.7 million in Sotheby auction 2002. And believed the most expensive paint...
