Pu:Tu 本岛 Means Taiwan (Land and People) in Comics (TiBE 2026 Discovery II) (Note 297)






(TiBE Taipei International Book Exhibition) - third time running since 2024, I have been making interesting and surprising discoveries. Quite rewarding - knowing that I have been going about things in a constructive way and that things fall into places of their own accords eventually.)

PEOPLE Indigenous Identity
Pu:tu 本島/漢人 means Taiwan 
Moto 本島/客人 (dialect) means Hakka
A-mutou-ra 未漢人化 means Saisiyat.

Validating hypothesis for research appears to have become unworthy of doing, uninteresting, unimportant, and unappreciated.
Indulgence and encouragement on hypothetical etymologies and arbitrary use of loanwords claiming indigenous or proto-Austronesian, on the other hand, becomes worthy cultural significance, interesting, important, and appreciated. 
Even on the occasions that results are misleading and highly questionable. 

Pu't/Puh//Pu:Tu 本岛 Means Taiwan Land and People examples are plenty in the two comics I was given by my publishing friend @Gaeabooks 蓋亞. 
One based on 1920 Taiwanese food culture under Japanese colonial. The other on 1944-46 Amis food culture over WWII period. 
内地人 are Japanese.

Big coverage on Amis Shawoman/witch 女祭司 tradition.
Sikawasay similar vocabulary appears on several occasions in 1930s Japanese reports (with linguistic etymology wherever applicable) 
Si- primarily refers to female - seems to be - for indigenous Taiwanese. But of course, could be both female and male (in Taiwan).
kawa 鬼 - refers to spirit/ghost - same with Tao. Hokkien rootword. I believe.
kuí-á ( kuí) 鬼神 Spirits - Hokkien loanword

古浪 (Kolang) means pickled things - Chinese/Hokkien loanword 漬 or 芥。Japanese 漬物. Kilo - 芥 mustard greens.

紅花襤褸菊 (Crassocephalum crepidioides) Japanese name
昭和草 Shōwa -green name appears only-in-Taiwan:

Saartje Specx (17th Century Dutch-Japanese, Famous Prisoner Batavia, Wife of First Missionary Fromosa) and Her Grave by Pineapple Stretch

Terrence Ying-Tai Lai  賴英泰 in a recent talk I attended mentioned 'Sara's Grave 莎拉之墓' in Tainan.  Saartje Specx story, unknown to many including myself, is most fascinating.  A 17th-century watercolor drawing of the Dutch East India Company’s Fort Zeelandia, present-day Tainan, taken from the Eugenius-atlas, which was commissioned by Laurens van der Hem, a Dutch lawyer and map collector.
